About Oats (O)
Oats can be classified into 5 major categories: White, Black,
Yellow, Gray and Yellow.
Oats are less exacting in soil requirements than any other cereal
grain except rye. To produce top yields, oats need at least medium
levels of essential nutrients- nitrogen, phosphate, and photash.
Oats grow best in temperate climates that have plentiful rain
and cool weather - South Dakota, Minnesota, and North Dakota.
Oats are planted or sewn in early April and late May and harvested
between mid July and late August. The number of acres planted
to oats has been shrinking for the last eight to ten decades,
due to the fact that Oats are primarily used as an animal feed
for horses and mules, which are also declining in number (Horses
were replaced by automobiles). Demand is animal related that 80
to 90% of the usage of Oats in any one year can be tied to Horses,
Mules and Chickens (no you can't ride a chicken).
In recent years the United States has produced roughly 15 to
20% of the worlds Oat supply. The largest producers are in the
former Soviet Union, as well as Western Europe.
